Sample Letter HR 2966
Dear Congress (man/woman) (name)::
I write to call your attention to the long overdue American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act, HR 2966, by the Honorable Burton (IN) and a broad spectrum of other House members.
Please contact Congressman Burton's staff and become a cosponsor without delay. I am joined by many people I know, and thousands from (name your state) who want to see this senseless, brutal slaughter feeding only the wealthy of France, Belgium, Germany and Japan (where they eat horses raw in sushi) our faithful, noble horses and ponies end now.
There are many sound alternatives to this killing. Some horses surely will need to be humanely euthanized (not to be confused with the very violent and terrifying slaughter), many stolen horses can be returned to their rightful and lawful owners and still others can be given new lives--many thousands killed yearly are young, healthy and can lead useful lives. These alternatives include: donating or leasing to: an equine rescue organization, police or park department, private riding schools, therapeutic/Equine Assisted Psychotherapy riding program; Prison inmate training programs, vet schools, Pony Clubs, private sale or leasing to individuals with proper references to mention just a few.
The history of the United States would be quite different if there were no horses in America. Horses, ponies, donkeys, burros and mules have played crucial roles and long been a symbol of America, our precious freedom and the west. Important roles horses an other equines have and do play include them acting as farm labor, transporter, soldier, law enforcement mount, pioneer, pack animal, Olympic partner, handicapped riding teacher, entertainer, status symbol, symbol of the west, income producer, trusted companion and pet
One role the horse has never played in the US is that of dinner; they have never been raised for human consumption and eating horse meat is abhorrent to most and in some states (TX, CA and IL eating or selling horsemeat is illegal). Slaughtering America's horses does not benefit Americans, it benefits two wealthy foreign families who own the three remaining plants that kill over 75,000 of our devoted horses and ponies yearly in the United States where once dead, their meat is flown to Europe.
I ask now for you to support a timely and well thought out bill, the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act. I await your reply about cosponsoring this bill eagerly.
With hope and thanks,
Sincerely,
